• Discussing aspects of style and why it’s a “Turkish” rondo
• How to embrace its mischief and theatrical nature
• How to practise effectively and use specific practice techniques
• Questions of articulation
• How to manage the octave passages
• Issues of velocity in semiquaver passages
• Managing the passages of thirds
• Communicating character.

You do NOT need to play in front of others in this workshop, and you do not need to have learnt it (although some basic knowledge of the piece might be helpful). We will definitely have fun and be creative, too!

Four hour long Zoom lessons, one per month, in a small group. I will send you the music prior to starting: just three or four lines of three different pieces on the ARSM syllabus (which could also be used for other boards, too).

We will look at the background of the pieces; aspects of style and analysis; fingerings, practice techniques. It will be a group piano lesson, so you will be playing too: sometimes while other group members practise certain passages or techniques, sometimes in front of the others. Lots of love and encouragement, as ever!

The point is that you would be in a position to decide if you wanted to continue learning the pieces yourself, and would already have a good awareness of stylistic considerations, etc.

And, of course, it will be fun, and you will get lots of lovely feedback to help you move forward as a pianist!

We will also talk about how to go about strategising for a diploma: timescales, requirements, how to manage the plate spinning, etc. Not to mention the whole psychology of it all…

Aimed at ADULT pianists (Grade 5 to Advanced), this mini course of three group lessons (maximum 3 participants) will look at the background and interpretation of the first movement of Beethoven’s “Moonlight” Sonata. We will explore practice techniques and technical issues, too.

Dates: Wednesday 26th April and 3rd and 10th May at 10am (60 mins).

The course fee is non-refundable, but recordings of the lessons will be available to be shared for course attendees only.

Please note that you should have a reasonable working knowledge of the first movement prior to the start of the course.
